Fulfilling God’s Dream

My dreams had told me once before
That when relationships would grow
We naturally would fit as one,
As if we were two lumps of dough—

But we both found we’re not that soft,
Our hearts are hard, our edges rough,
And when we fit ourselves together
We weren’t compatible enough—

I know we would have split apart,
If God did not have other plans:
He took His hammer and His chisel,
And then the cleansing stage began—

He whittled at our selfishness
And carved into our dreams,
With trials he sanded smooth our edges,
Until His will had reigned supreme—

We didn’t understand the pain,
But then we found when He was done,
The trials had bonded us together,
And now, at last, we fit as one—

We see now why God’s binding us,
And why He uses us, mere stones:
Together we fulfill His dreams
As we are built into His home!
